A dark, eerie story  - posted by Rocky Keele 02-24-2007 19:58
This story had a dark, menacing feel to it. Not your typical fantasy story. Actually, I guess it could be classified as scifi. Anyway, a bit dark for my taste, but an interesting feel.

This book is actually the first two books in The Book of the New Sun series: The shadow of the torturer and The claw of the Conciliator. I was absolutely blown away by the story and the writing of Gene Wolfe! About an apprentice torturer in a far future earth that is exiled for showing mercy. The whole series is about his wanderings and eventual rise to leader of the land. Deep, full of hidden puzzles, funny and contains some very unique ideas. Not only that but it is written on a very high level I had to read it very slowly and with a dictionary by my side but I was rewarded immensely! One of my favorite books of all time.
