The life of Pip  - posted by Rusty 07-22-2007 23:34
I am a huge fan of Dickens work. I think he is one of the greatest English writers ever. I have never been disappointed by his novels, even though they have all been a labor to get through.
This one details the life of Pip from the time he is a young boy until he is in his late 30's. Pip is a poor English boy in 1800's England, who is hired by a bitter old woman to keep her company. There he meets the beautiful Estella and spends the rest of the book trying to win her over and adapt to an upper class society.
If nothing else this book is great because of Charles Dickens amazing writing. However the story is good too - showing how a person can become haughty and have the wrong "expectations" in life.
I thought the funniest and most memorable parts come when Pip befriends Wemmick - an attorney's clerk who lives in a small self-built castle with his almost deaf father! Funny stuff! Overall a great, although heavy, read.
